IMVU removing orientations?

The new gdpr privacy laws require companies to provide their customers with a way to hide their sexual orientation settings. IMVU inc probably did a cost analysis and customer usage analysis to see if it would be worth their time / money to add the new privacy feature required by law. IMVU inc then most likely came to the conclusion that it would be far cheaper to just do away with the setting ... and used the customer usage statistic to support their decision. Personally, I wonder if their customer usage statistic is flawed ... they should have only checked the sexual orientation status of paying customers in that statistic, else the true stats are going to get drowned out by one time login dummy accounts, bot accounts, and non serious players.

But they already offer you a way to hide it, they didn't need to do anything to abide by the new laws. You can set your orientation to "Prefer Not To Say".

That is still sexual orientation data. The fact that you prefer not to say what your sexual orientation is ... is data about your sexual orientation.

Really not spamming the thread but all I can say is "Wow!" I mean seriously "Wow!" Thanks for the info. I was going to report it as a glitch.

To be honest I'm still shocked will they remove genders too because of people that don't consider themselves as Female or Male?

@Unkn0wn

Gender is not covered in the new UK privacy laws. The new laws only cover:

ethnicity / race, religion, political affiliation, and sexual orientation

The removal of orientation on IMVU has nothing to do with non binary genders / orientations. All sites on the internet are going through this if they do not want blocked from the UK due to the UK's new privacy laws.

I noticed this too not a big deal to me personally whether it says straight or not but i have seen a lot of users sharing posts with their orientation listed now so it may be an issue for some not to be able to show it

IMVU has always strived to provide its users with clear and simple information about how personal data is collected and protected through our http://www.imvu.com/catalog/web_info.php?section=Info&topic=privacy. We have recently made some changes to our http://www.imvu.com/catalog/web_info.php?section=Info&topic=privacy, most of which reflect the increased transparency requirements of the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (known as the 'GDPR'). Please click https://help.imvu.com/s/question/0D51L000052F0sRSAS/updates-to-our-privacy-policy?t=1527769138098 to learn more about our response to the GDPR and some of the actions we have already taken.

Upon click on the last link this is what it states:

At IMVU, our number one goal is for our users to have the best possible experience. As part of making your experience great, we understand the importance of being open and transparent about the personal data we collect in order to provide our service, how the data is used, and with whom we share it.

IMVU has always aimed to provide its users with clear and simple information about how personal data is collected and protected through our Privacy Policy. We have recently made some changes to our Privacy Policy, most of which reflect the increased transparency requirements of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (known as the ‘GDPR’). Check out the full policy here: http://im.vu/privacy

Our enhancements to the Privacy Policy are intended to provide even more transparency about:

how we collect, use, share, and protect your personal data,
the legal bases we rely on to process your personal data, and
your privacy rights and how to exercise them (based on where you are located).

Many of you have seen or heard of some of the changes we’ve made recently, including:

New age restrictions in EU countries; each EU member-country has adopted their own official age of consent. Even though IMVU’s youngest allowed age is 13, some IMVU members the EU may not be permitted to join until they are 14, 15, or 16 years old. This affects existing users as well. If a user in France, for example, joined IMVU at the age of 13 and is now 15, they will be prompted to get their parent’s or guardian’s consent before being able to access their account again.
IMVU users who live in the affected EU countries were required to accept our cookie policy beginning May 25th.
Some email settings were reverted to opt-out by default. For example, if you used to receive email for each Friend Request, these were stopped and you will need to opt-in to getting them, if you want to continue receiving them, by going to your Account Settings.

In updating our Privacy Policy, we have also made it easier to read so that users can easily understand how we use personal data to make our platform work and to provide related services – as well as how to make certain privacy-related choices.

Over the next few weeks, we will also be rolling out new tools which will help you more easily understand and manage your privacy choices, including a new feature allowing you to download your account data. Check back on this page for the latest updates. If you reside in an EU member-country and are required to take any of the steps listed above, you will be prompted to do so when you login. If you aren’t asked for anything, no action is required.

Please click here to read the revised Privacy Policy, which is effective starting May 25, 2018: http://im.vu/privacy

Thank you for using IMVU!

Jeff

Director, Customer Care & Education

In reading this if you live in the United states there is really nothing but alot of reading for you to understand what is going on and to see the changes. For those in Europe you will have to resign the privacy statement according to your new laws as well as read and notate the changes.

Hopefully this helps people to understand all that is going on.

This caught my eye. I'm unclear outside of Europe if such feature will be implemented. But seems a security risk if privacy info will be accessible should an acct get h4c|<7d by a meer link.
