Opacity

OK, so I am feeling stoopid. I thought I understood how opacities worked and how to use them but...I recently tried to put a hole in a t-shirt - distressed look kinda thing. I expected the t-shirt texture to go transparent where I applied the hole and the avi skin to appear underneath. Instead, I got a hole right thru the whole avi! Was NOT trying to do bullet holes! Did sumpin' change in the way IMVU handles opacities or am I just not remembering everything I need to do to remove pieces of the texture. Am I explaining my problem well enough for someone to help me figure out what I'm doing wrong? Done wasted two days clicking on different settings on the materials tab trying to make sense of this.

. Here's the mesh I'm using https://www.imvu.com/shop/product.php?products_id=39723468. I did try clicking on skin composite but it tries to 'bake' the whole skin into the 'hole' I created with my opac, if that makes sense. What I mean is, I cut out a diamond in the middle of that mesh I linked - just as a test. The skin that then shows thru didn't have my male nipples where they should be but the hole had the complete default naked male texture packed into that small diamond shaped cutout that I made. I'm thinking the mesh is somehow flawed but SAL made good stuff in the past so, I'm confused.

Please - Try it yourself and let me know if you have the same problem.

LOLS! I took a look at the mesh. There is NO body beneath the shirt, just portions to the neck and elbow that are visible are in the mesh. Sadly any cutouts isn't going to work as intented on this product. Some meshers do remove the none visible parts to cut down on unnecessary kb or poly count.

I am wondering however...IF shirt can be made layerable? Then can be used over a body, then can manipulate the opacity that way and do what you want?

Making the shirt layerable could work. I'm not trying to do anything real fancy, just wanted some tears in the fabric. I may just go look for a different mesh to derive from - lol. Thanks for checking the mesh for me. I keep tellin' myself I'm going to fiddle with 3DSMax again but I never get around to it. Thanks again ~hugz~

I FOUND A WAAAAAAY!!!!

Deriving from the product override in the debug02

http://prntscr.com/ljowlg
Add Data in Debug 01 BodyPartId0 191
Override the index number to 191 of the Mesh slot from 2 in Debug02. Some how the body skin layer returns. I dont understand why but the skin layer is there!

Then remove the body part id 2
http://prntscr.com/ljoqk0

Here is the result changing the opacity layer. This was only a test but the skin is beneath

Awesome that you kept at this. I'm sure there are people on here going "of course that's how you do that" and I wouldn't even know that all of the above would have any affect at all - lol. Going to go try and replicate it right now. Thanks Xhyn!

Well I'll be damned, it worked. For some reason, my debug 01 and debug 02 screens looked a little different than yours - maybe we used different meshes. Once I overrode the Mesh0 section on debug 02, Mesh0 was also added to debug 01. When I then went to the config tab to remove the check in the Clothing Overide from box 2, it was already gone and only 191 was checked. Went back to the meshes tab, added my opac to the t-shirt material, hit Apply Changes and sho' nuff, I had me skin back - lol.

Going to not save this .chkn and go back and do it couple more times watching all screens more carefully and writing this stuff down. Did I mention you're awesome? Thanks again :)

Edited again to clean up my english and write (almost) complete sentences.

I will share my 'distressed' tshirt :)
