IMVU Creating vs Second Life?

I actually found 2 people who are helping me out. Building is so different. You can build stuff in game with shapes that you re-shape and combine. I started building a house right on the property without ever opening 3dsmax or blender. Obviously less options and details than mesh items. Example, I can build/spawn a cube and remove 3 all sides but one to create a plane. 4 planes and I have walks... and now I'm wondering why I didn't just make the cube huge and hollow it out to make a quick room. D'oh! Lol it's ok. I'm learning.

Huh, that sounds interesting. You'll have to show us some of the stuff you've made.

That's how you would make runes in the KillingFloor SDK back in the day.

Uploading anything, be it a texture, a mesh, a sound, an animation cost mearly 10L$ each upload.

It's very cheap compared to IMVU. The only fees you may need is from selling on the SL marketplace. Otherwise selling inworld can be totally free if you find the good spot or people that would give you a small land to sell your stuff. If not, renting a small land to make a shop is not so expansive and doesn't even require the use of real money if you can live from selling your products.

Regarding the adult content, you don't need a premium account for it. Just register on SL with bday date above 18yo.

Some creators are very friendly and help each others. Lot of creators work together to deliver quality products that work and integrate seamslessly with other creators products. Something I actually never seen on IMVU or very rarely.

I never did figure out how to buy clothes though

I've only played for a few hours but if I remember you need to go to the marketplace on the website in order to buy them.

Oh dear xD You are missing a lot of things... First I would suggest you to download https://www.firestormviewer.org/ cause it's the most popular viewer on SL and it's totally fine to use a different client on SL (not like imvu). Also SL is open source hence the existence of another grid called OpenSim. Nice 2009 account btw. I wish I could switch my playtime between IMVU and SL...

Anyway for clothing you have 2 choices. Either you go on the marketplace https://marketplace.secondlife.com/ or you go into ingame stores. Most marketplace stores have a link to their ingame store but rarely the opposite. Some creators don't like the marketplace because they have additional fees that they don't have when selling directly ingame. Also sometime you find much more stuff inside their ingame stores rather than their marketplace.

Best way to find some good ingame stores is ... getting social and talk to people. No surprise here hehe.

I've spent the last couple nights learning SL and setting up an avatar and diving into the sex products (which are not only legal but super easy to get).

I'll just re iterate what
@KokoNyny
said, clothes can be purchased in one of two ways:

1. You can purchase them from the website catalog just like in IMVU. (https://marketplace.secondlife.com/)

2. You go to a 3d marketplace (sort of like a room on IMVU) and interact with the products in world.

I've only purchased 1 product so far but I've made an entire (somewhat decent) avatar, there are lots of places in world where you can get freebies.

I also agree that you should switch download firestorm. It's much better than the "vanilla" viewer (as they call them).

I will say this though, IMVU has a better shop, inventory, and dressup interface. SL uses really outdated looking UIs and the UX is kind of terrible. But SL offers WAAAY more functionality in terms of customizing your avatar. You can editing products (moving, scaling, etc) in world instead of a separate mode. So if you buy a dick for example and you don't like where it is, you can put it wherever you want, even your forehead if you so desire. You can even change the body shape from butt size, shoulder width, leg length down to package bulge and even body fat.

But overall IMVU is way more user friendly if you can believe that. It's a tad easier to navigate through the client and while it's not as feature rich I do believe it's easier and quicker to get a good looking avi as you can just buy a body, head, etc.. instead of having to fiddle with sliders or find the right products that work with the baked on meshes you have equipped.

Ah yes freebies and lucky chairs in some places are worth it. Even some freebies are sometime even good quality nearly same as expensive products.

Lucky chairs are chairs with a letter above it that change randomly. If the letter is the first letter of your username then you can sit on the chair and you get the item.

Note also when you get a product, most of them are "boxed". That's mean you need to unbox it. Some are just a HUD that appear on your screen and need to be clicked. Other are boxes in your hand that you also need to click on them. But some must be rezzed (aka dropped on the floor) to be unpacked.

Another frequent term that you may see is fatpack aka "bundle". For example those bundle contain the same item but in different colors.

If we can meet each other in SL I could send you a notecard with a lot of links to differents store with freebies and useful stuff.

I will agree with
@DataMine
that SL UI is kinda old fashion and the game is way more complex than imvu but for me it's kinda a good tradeoff since you get a lot more customization and freedom in return. But I know it can be intimidating for the regular imvu user that would prefer an easier multiverse world.

That was something that took a bit of getting used to. Would you happen to know why products come like that? I assume it's because some products come with multiple files (notes, huds, mesh, alpha, etc) and it makes delivery easier from a technical standpoint.

I'm still having a little trouble getting the performance just right. I notice a major fps dip on high settings especially in populated rooms. Granted I'm using a 1050ti for the time being while I wait for the market to stabilize but damn, doesn't have trouble with games.

Another issue I'm having is long loading times for textures. When I go into freebie stories for example I have to stand there for a few minutes while all the textures fade in. I've checked to make sure my network settings are correct but it doesn't seem to have helped much.
