1. Open your image file.

2. Select the area you want to make transparent.

3. Select the appropriate selection tool from the Tool window or the Tools - Selection Tools menu on the Layer window. You can use either the magic Wand/Fuzzy Select (selecting contiguous region based on color U) tool or the Select regions by color tool.

4. Add alpha Channel (transparent layer)

5. menu > Layer > Transparency > Add alpha Channel.

6. Clearing the area

7. menu Edit > Clear.

8. Now, you see the image with transparent background.

9. Save the file

10. Done

If you save it as a PNG file, be sure to select the 'Save colour values from transparent pixels' option in the Save as PNG dialog box. But IE does not support showing PNG transparencies (alpha channels) . So, the best way is to save the image as a GIF since all major browers support transparency.

Works as a charm, thanks!

Awesome. I've been using the color to transparency option but it makes parts of my image transparent that I don't want. Also, my background is usually still there, just lighter so its barely visible but still visible enough to annoy me. Your method works way better. :dancingapple:

@NullData
Did you read the Header...GIMP TUTORIAL...This is a gimp tutorial and has nothing to do with Photoshop as there is Photoshop Tutorials as well in it's own area . So to mention in a GIMP tutorial about Photoshop is Mute.

Thank you for this tutorial, I have always had a hard time trying to figure out how to make my picture background transparent never did think gimp had a way of doing so. I used to seek on google for online background removal just to make background transparent and still then sometimes they do not do enough.

i have been editor for 2 yrs now and gimp used to be as good like the charm but now we have many AI technology that will literally remove the background perfectly fine. Some AI like for say Adobe firefly is one of the best for many things and transparent background is one of them.
