I've been doing research on how to convert Avatar names to CID.

So far I found the http://www.imvu.com/catalog/web_av_pic.php?av=USERNAME method. However, this doesn't work all the time.

Of course the avatar home page method but requires you to be logged in.

Is there any other betters ways?

Why not just use the Bio Generator I made? It does all the work for you. services/generators/imvu-bio-generator/imvu-bio-generator.php

There is no sure fire way. Instead, there are a slew of unreliable methods. Pragmatically, we had to program multiple AvatarName to CID conversion methods which fall back on each other if one method fails.
@DataMine
put a lot of hard work into it. You can see the end result on his Bio Generator service, which he linked to above. The end result is extremely reliable and rather amazing.

I read that earlier today. I would assume the display picture would be the first way and avatar homepage would be the last way

The web picture is indeed one method but it's not always reliable. The techniques we use are kind of a trade secret to make sure our tools are better than the competition.

I can tell you that we use a minimum of 4 techniques to convert a username to cid and they are arranged in a specific way that if one fails it tries another and will stop as soon as one works. I've written it as efficiently as possible and it's still hundreds of lines of code. That said, there are some instances where our code fails so it's not perfect.

Bottom line is unless you're doing this to sell or in our case to attract traffic to a website, it's not worth the effort.

What language are you learning?

PHP

If you're really wanting to learn the language and not just wanting to make an IMVU tool then I would suggest going to php.net and looking at the Language Reference. Learning the basic building blocks of the language will pay off way more and make doing what you really want to do easier in the future.

Once you get a good understanding of php, making imvu scripts becomes more of a datamining problem then a php problem trying to figure out where the data you want is stored.

I know the basic functions on php already (watched lots of youtube videos). I am trying to make a php script which is actually useful (even though there are so many of avatar name to cid already).
