It is a MOBA (Multiplayer online battle arena).
You typically have 2 teams, each with their own base.
There are paths between the two bases.
Ever few minutes, each base produces an army of NPC's (non player characters) that meet in the middle and fight.
Each player controls a hero type unit that tries to control the flow of battle and push their team's army towards the enemy base, with the goal of taking the enemy base.
There are typically towers along the lanes that you can destroy or capture to help gauge who is winning.
As the game goes on, your hero grows and becomes stronger every time you kill an enemy.
